Attached is photo I took when 2nd Purser Akaroa
in 1969..focsle bell still Amazon..!
As collector/dealer in ships bells, is it unusual not
to replace bells when sold and renamed? Realise
supposedly unlucky to change a ships name….
or is that SS&A bit tight?! but happy times.

It is not unlucky to change a ship's name but it is supposed to be unlucky to replace the ship's bell. Every ship that I sailed on, which had had a name change, kept the original bell. e.g. Royal Mail's Douro still had the Hornby Grange bell.

Have learnt it doesn’t always follow especially when sold overseas
or like Akaroa when heavily converted to car carrier ? or perhape when
a bell goes ‘missing’ on being sold to new owners !!

There is an interesting bell on eBay right now with 2 names. The SS JW Van Dike (sp) was built in 1917 at pier 70 SF CA. She was later named Albert Hill. The bell has her first name filled in but still visible and the her second name cut into the bell. I collect all things T2 tanker and hope to find a small bell from one some day.
Strange this sight censors out the word Dike spelled with a Y. Sad that a ships name cannot be posted properly.

AMAZON ,ARAGON and ARLANZA Royal Mail Lines. She was taken by SS&A in 1968. Your photo... 1969, still using Royal Mail colours... the brown colours for the masts and deck machinery.

The bell on the Bostondyke in the 50s was "Springwear".
