Reported in the"Vancouver Sun" today's date!!Quote-Vancouver's struggling cruisehip industry suffered a blow this weekfrom Alaska voters who passed a package of taxes and environmental regulations on the industry, including a 50 dollar tax on each cruise passenger. In a state-wide ballot Tuesday, voters passed an initiative that will assess the 50 dollar tax on each cruise passenger, and tax cruise lines corporate earniings and gambling revenues reaped when the ships are in Alaskan waters. The initiative also requires cruise ships to obtain waste water discharge permits while operating in Alaskan waters, and to pay increased fines for any violations-unquote. There is more but it is mainly to do with Vancouvers declining cruise ship revenues and declining passenger numbers , down from well over a million in 2001 to just over 900,000 in 2005 (Cloud)

The tax will be passed on to the tourist,so the fare will increase.
The cruise ships need to stay away for a year and let the shop keepers cry for awhile.
