Italian Naval sail training ship AMERIGO VESPUCCI outward bound on the River Thames during August 1978. She is based on a 19th century frigate.

Displacement: 3540 tons standard - Built by Castellammare Yards (Naples) - commissioned in 1931. Refitted at La Spezia Naval Dockyard in 1964.
Her sister ship CRISTOFORO COLOMBO has been taken over by USSR Navy after WWII as compensation for war damages.

I have a photo of this ship taken in Bermuda about 1950 which i will post when I have scanned it Cheers (Thumb)
