This ship built for round the world cargo service had a certificate to carry more passengers than RMS Queen Elizabeth excepting when QE was a troopship.

Steerage Class

At the start of the Twentieth Century some cargo liners on the Australia / New Zealand service had certificates for huge numbers of steerage class emigrants. The clue is that the ship was on the round the world service. Sounds like a White Star/SSA ship to me

Blue Flue Tyndareus 2000 pax on Mecca run.?
I will second this suggestion. Queen Elizabeth had accommodation for 2,283 passengers, as built. I have a reference to Tyndareus carrying 2,500 pilgrims.

Well done lads Tyndareus is correct. I amended the QE when trooping as she apparently carried 5000. What a disaster that would have been!
Tyndareus struck a mine when trooping and almost sank, fortunately with no loss of life.
She went on to be a favourite Haji ship.
