BP Fleet & Stena Baltica

It seems odd to me that there is no online archive of the BP fleet and I have seen this mentioned in one or two threads in this forum. Helder Line has a list of the Shell fleet whilst Auk Vissers Tanker web site focusses on ESSO although there are a lot of other ships included.

I have decided to do something about this and have been rounding up information on ships owned, managed or manned by BP. I expect to have this online in a week or so at gtzx.org.uk and hope that users will help by adding information they have about the ships they sailed on. The site will have the facility to add crew lists and information about and incidents from the ships life with BP.

So far I have partial records for about 420 ships, I think this must be a nearly complete list, but there may be more.

One ship I am struggling with is the Stena Baltica, manned by BP in late 70s, early 80s (?) and used as an accommodation ship in Sullom Voe (?). Can anyone confirm dates it was manned by BP and where it was located.

Also, does anyone know when BP staff stopped manning the Iranian ships, Minab, Mokran, Marun, Sivand, Shoush etc?

STENA BALTIC (79-82)converted to an accommodation ship 11.3.79 and sold 1982
Looking forward to your new website Chris.Helderline website very good. Hope yours is along the same lines
I too am looking forward to the new website Chris and will give any help I can.
My memory may not be what it used to be, but the name Stena baltica doesn't ring any bells ? I thought it was the Stena Nordica that was the accomodation vessel at Sullom voe ?

Thanks for the info.
According to the book BP Tankers by Harvey and Solly the agreement with NITC was ended in 1981.
On the thread before this one started by Yung he was on the Mokran in January 82

Chris,

Your posting deserves a decent response, but at the moment do not have the time. However I have spent the last 15+ years collecting and scavenging BP information from over 1000 ex personnel and have many contacts world wide.

There is nobody who has a BP collection like mine and I freely give information at people's request

You never thought to ask me?

Hi Graham,

We did exchange a few emails a month or two ago. I am aware of your interest in the subject, and you sent me copies of your lists which are very interesting. My focus is on the ships, going back to 1915 and I will be glad to receive any information you have on the subject.

I'm not sure what you mean by "you never though to ask me?". Ask you what?

A great initiative Chris; I look forward to seeing your new website!

On the thread before this one started by Yung he was on the Mokran in January 82

I was on the Sivand from January to April 1984
I remember being on the Resolution 1983, we got orders for Kharg and a few crew members didn't much fancy it. Whether they were eyeing an early pay off or not I don't know. However The company ended up doing a straight swap with volentry crew members off the Shoush (I'm fairly sure) happened she was a dry ship ....... oh dear. So we were definitely involved then.

Hi Graham. Do you have any Cadet Newsletters from 1969 to 1973 ? Nice to see you're still on top of the BP archive! I wonder if they still have those beautiful tanker models in Britannic House, Moorgate, London. My brother (Capt P.D,Dalby) once saw them being thrown in a skip outside !

Bob ,
My collection Of Apprentices/Cadets Newsletters starts with Vol 1 1948 and ends at cadets newsletter volume V 1966 #22, 13 volumes in all. from your request I presume you know they did exist after 1966?

They are as hard to find as 'Hen's teeth' and have not come across any for many years. I ofen wonder when they finally finished printing them.

So many people threw away their old BP papers after leaving BP ,someNA/NC's just kept pieces of their Journals, I'm not even sure when they were last required to keep their daily journals.

It is really surprising what BP did keep ( such a shame nobody wanted the models). I believe they had a warehouse fire some time ago and lost files, but do not know really what that consisted of. I have yet to find if there is a list of all Engineering Apprentices/cadets that passed through their hands 1952 onwards. I have the feeling their was a register of NA's but when did it start 1919?

Most of my BP collection is from private sources, taken years of asking and cadging, feel very priveledged to have chance to assimailate such a varied collection.

However all is not lost I would like to hear more from you about your BP seatime ( I have seen your profile but no years mentioned), See my email address in my profile and send me an email.

I left the company in 1983 so what happened after that I would'nt know. I was just going on the book.
Chris,

We were in contact from 26 Jan 2015 to 29 Jan 2015, you gave me details of your seatime, I gave you copies of NA/NC databases and BPTC vessels and crew list. I told you a little of what I do, you also viewed my (old and Jaded, but still valid) website which I would have thought gave you an appreciation of more of what I attempt to do.

You started an SN thread today asking questions...

I did a short reply including........

And you came back with.........
I'm not sure what you mean by "you never thought to ask me?". Ask you what?

Did you really mean to write those last three words!!

FYI

1) I have a very large collection of Ships photographs (many graciously donated years ago by another member of SN) but including a number of my own. The list of “BP Ships Photographs” consists of over 600 ships of which 421 have photographs, many of them multiple photographs. 1917 onwards .

2) Stena Baltica is listed in Ships Movements Nov 1979 (accommodation vessel Sullum Voe with full crew list) to December1980 with Partial crew list. No listing from then on!

3) Minab, Mokran, Marun, Sivand, Shoush etc?, There is a lot of info in Ships Movements 1982/1985. By Feb 1983 Minab, Marun, Mokran were ‘Trading Gulf Area” with just 5 UK crew listed. By May 1984 just two Iranian crew members list each vessel.

4) April 1984 there were full UK crew lists for Sivand and Shoush, by October 1984 they were not listed. However the three M’s still listed Trading Gulf area , but showing no crew.

I do know someone who was heavily involved with the Irano BP operation in BP head Office at the time.

I presume you have copies of The British Tankers by Norman Middlemiss and Solly & Harvey's BP Tankers, they contain a lot of info on the company ships

Hi Graham,

It appears that I have upset or offended you in some way, if so, I apologise, it was not my intent. As I said earlier, I am well aware of the wealth of information you have collected over the years. I have included links to your site from my site, one a general reference to BP Apprentices, with the text "A site run by Graham Wallace, who joined BP as an engineering Apprentice in 1958, leaving as 4/E in 1962. Graham has amassed a wealth of information over the years and is always happy to share it.", and another from my British Crown page to your article on the Crown.

I posted my questions on the forum, rather than asking you directly, in order to get responses from a wide range of people. I know you follow the forum closely, so I was not excluding you, rather including a wider audience.

Ps I am off to the Lakes (the English ones) in a few minutes for a few days walking and may not have access to the net until the weekend.
Well ,thank you for that Chris, enjoy your walking. I only went to your Lakes once in 1995, never managed to completely get to the top of Old Man of Coniston (?)

But I have traversed the Candian side of all the Great Lakes. Leaving the Toronto area it took me 11 days heading West to get out of Ontario, I loitered.

Just a weeny request, I was a 1955 BP Marine Engineering Apprentice , not 1958. A slip of the pen I guess

I'll have to look up your comments on the Crown, one day I might write that book.

Graham

Chris,

When you say 420 ships, what are your parameters for inclusion?
Our book BP Tankers included over 1,000 vessels of all types and nationalities but all controlled by BP. Since then the search has continued and many more have been added. The fleets in the original book have also been revised and with many new images are being considered for release as a pdf book on CD.
