BP Shipping paid a record $220,300 for express transit of an oil tanker through the Panama Canal.

The canal, which links the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans, is facing a backlog following maintenance work. The previous record of $200 th. was set by a container ship sailing to the Atlantic last week.

The BP tanker may be one of six transporting crude oil to the west coast from the Caribbean to make up the shortfall in Alaskan supply, reports Daily Telegraph.
