This trailing suction hopper dredger was built by NQEA Cairns in 1999/2000.
Particulars: 84 m in length, 16 m. beam, 2900 cub metre hopper capacity.
Vessel is fully operational in Queensland ports since 2000.

Hereby some photos which I took during the construction as well as some photos when completed. (copyright!)

First series:
Large initial sections inside the shed.
cargo hold (hopper)
stern area under construction

This is the largest dredger ever built in Australia.

Continue to next series.......

Last series of photos

vessel ready to be launched
vessel afloat
details of deck equipment

Hope you enjoyed this photographic display of a newbuilding.

It is only a restricted series as I have hundreds of photos which were taken during the construction period.

This vessel was commissioned by the Brisbane Port Corporation and in fact replaced the aging "Sir Thomas Riley".

"only the very best antifouling is used on this vessel"

A.D. Geopotes

Bob,
The A.D. Geopotes was built by Newcastle State Dockyard in 1972 and renamed A.M. Vella in 1987 under which name she worked in the port of Melbourne for many years. I supervised her in the Wagglen drydock in Melbourne few times.
She was sold to Hong Kong interest later and sank in March 2002 with the loss of 8 sailors.

You can read all about this vessel and find some photos on following site:

Bob,
I found some photos of the Geopotes 1 (or A.D. Geopotes 1) when drydocking in Melbourne mid 80's and have added these to the same site as above.
