CARNARVON CASTLE was built in 1926 by Harland & Wolff, Belfast. With a length of 656 feet, she was of 20,063grt and had accommodation for 311 First class, 276 Second class and 266 Third class passengers. Her maiden voyage to Cape Town was on 16 July 1926 when she sailed from Southampton.
She saw service in World War II as HMS CARNARVON CASTLE as an armed merchant cruiser. As such she saw action against the German raider THOR in the South Atlantic in December 1940. In this she suffered serious damage with six dead and 32 injured. Permanent repairs were carried out in Cape Town.
After the War, she returned to the Mail Service and was withdrawn when the TRANSVAAL CASTLE came into service. She was sold for breaking up at Mihara in 1962.

As built in 1926, Carnarvon Castle was one of the standard Harland & Wolff 1920s motor passenger ships. Upright bar stem, flat front slab superstructure, two sharply raked squat funnels, the tops of which were horizontal and parallel to the waterline. The forward funnel was a dummy and too far forward for a balanced profile. Some people admire these H&W designs, some hate their appearance. I think they look like upright pianos.
Then when she was only 11 years old, she was sent back to her builders and completely rebuilt. The owners obviously did not like her looks either. The ugly duckling became a swan, as shown in the shots published in this thread.

Hi Digby, my father was also on board the Carnarvon Castle in 1948 with his parents and an uncle. Now that I'm the only descendant left in South Africa, I doing a bit of family research. My Father's name was Gordon Kent and he was 15 at the time.

It is really Quite Interesting what you come across on this website entirely by chance. I sailed on Carnarvon Castle as a passenger in 1959, Cape Town to Southampton, aged 5 years old. I still remember the crossing of the line ceremony and thought how daft can grown-ups get. I was dunked and initiated along with all the other kids, which served me well 20 years later when crossing the line on a Swire cargo ship as R/O. I was exempted from the mayhem and served as one of Neptune's assistants.
