I am sure that there will be many of you who will be saddened to hear that Captain Cecil ‘Cess’ Smylie died suddenly on the 7th February at the age of 83. I sat on the Management Board of HQS Wellington (the white ship on the Thames outside Temple tube station) with Cess, a thoroughly nice guy.

After attending the Thames Nautical Training College, HMS Worcester, Cess joined P&O as a Deck Cadet in 1951 and his first ship was ‘Soudan’. His last appointment was as Staff Captain of ‘Oriana’ in the early 1970’s.

After leaving P&O, he pursued a career in Pilotage and Port Agency Management in the Middle East for several years, before becoming Managing Director of Fairdeal International Ltd, a Shipping and Ship Management Company, based in the Baltic Exchange in London.

He was also a Past Master of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners.

The funeral will be held at 1.00 pm on Friday 16 February at Comrie Parish Church, 22 Burrell Street, Comrie, Crieff, PH6 2JP. This will be followed by a Cremation Service at 11.45 am on Monday 19 February at Dundee Crematorium, McAlpine Road, Dundee, DD3 8SD.
