hello keith i sailed on the s.s. blairdevon in 1955. triple expansion coalburner with chain steering. the chief engineer was mckensie the second engineer was croll from paisley who had been superintendent engineer for nisbet in the past. no love was lost between them. i was 4/engineer then. if i remember there was a sail up forrard which could be used for better steerage. nisbet office was in sauchihall street glasgow,apart from myself 3/mate chief and second engineer the rest of the crew including the captain were highlandmen.
