HMS Bacchante , a Leander class Frigate, is about to be Scuppered of Wellington NZ. Renamed HMNZS Wellington in 1981 she has been de-commissioned and sold to a trust, with the intention of becomming a dive destination and artificial reef. The scheduled date is Nov 12th. Until that date she will be moored in front of the 'Te Papa' museum, Wellington Harbour.

Ordered from Vickers, Walker Naval Yard, Newcastle - completed in 1969 by Swan Hunter as agents for Vickers after the merger of the Tyne yards. I was the Swan Hunter representative on the acceptance trials. Nice ship, she has lasted well.

What is it with Leanders becoming artificial reefs? Jeez.
Wouldn't it be great if at least one of them was preserved? Probably our most notable post war warship.
I wonder if we can persuade Chile (?) if we can have HMS Leander back.
