Probably been asked before but how long have guys spent onboard a vessel; not time signed on but having it as their ‘home’.
Was on the Glengarry/Dardanus when she went to scrap in Japan in 1971(Glengarry built in 1939). The Chinese Bosun had only been on two Blue Funnel ships all his life and retired from arrival in Japan.

Joe Bates joined Blue Funnel's Hector in Harland and Wolffs Belfast yard as her first bosun in March 1950. He left her in Kaohsiung on 5 July 1972 when she was scrapped.
22 years in one ship!

Yes, Pat and a fine seaman he was too. Hard but fair taskmaster. I managed 4 voyages with Joe, all memorable.

I do know of an individual who spent 32 years as QM in the same ship.
