Not the best of pictures but one of an Ellerman's ship. It is either the City of Hull, City of London or City of Liverpool on the Canadian service. Built in 1970/71 they were of 9,767gt.

I did three trips on the Hull, her maidan voyage almost round the world, flew us back from St John as she joined the CCL service I then came back and did two more before I left the company. The Liverpool I had on charter under her new (Greek ?) owners out of the St Lawrence/Great lakes in 1987. The London I bumped into a few times around the Cape but since my sailing days never saw her again.
Attached a photo I found of the Hull.

Was City of Canterbury a Sister? She was the 1st ship I had been on, for a good look around, when on a ships visit from Gravesend Sea School. I think she was in Milwall Docks, brand new Jan '77?

No the Canterbury was of a different class. I sailed on her in '78, my first trip.

I was once in Southampton with an unusual Ellermans boat called the City of ondo, next day I saw it was the City of London and some wag had blocked off the L and N of that illuminated box on the bridge wings

"Uncle Norman" ....I did 3 trips with him in the early 70s with him as apprentice & 3rd mate.
Once, in St John, due the the extreme cold, he managed to buckle the deck in the saloon 'dancing' with a couple of nurses - from then on whenever we were back in the cold, the deck 'bounced' with a "boing" when walking over that plate.
On another occasion, there was a snow storm, so the nurses had to stay on board overnight....but Uncle Norman being the gent he was, asked us for pajamas for the girls.. he put them up in the owner's suite.. a lot of disappointment for us all that night - we thought we were going to get lucky !
