Does anyone else think that whoever wrote "Clouds across the Moon" must have made a phone call from a ship to base it on. Ignore the fact that it is a call to Mars , and it is just like it was making a "Steam" (hf) radio call from a ship. I am sure i made dozens like that with similar conversations etc. The only good thing about losing the connection at the end was that you did not get charged!!

i once received a call while i was at sea - bit crazy as every one in the radio room could hear-both ends of the conversation going on

Chris de Burgh has a song called 'ship to shore' which is about..........making a call which is difficult to transmit and receive.

Used to listen in when the captain was having a call to the office to hear our orders next port etc. No privacy then either when you wanted to speak to your wife (girlfriend) !!

Landline phones are now mostly cordless, so let us not forget that they and our mobile phones are basically radio transmitters and receivers.

I felt sorry for the poor guy being told by his girlfriend it was over, when Portishead had ships waiting QRY 15 on that frequency and we could all bear witness to the tragedy.

Passenger ship phone calls were the best. Now and again I was QRY2 behind GVSN (Oriana).....there were some absolute classics....

I had a notice hanging in the Radio room. It read THE ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD WHO CAN'T HEAR YOUR PHONE CONVERSATION IS THE BLOKE SITTING NEXT TO YOU WITH HIS HEADPHONES ON LISTENING TO HEAVY METAL MUSIC !
