A $4.5 MILLION cruise ship terminal could be open in Darwin by the end of next year.

The terminal will replace a tent at Fort Hill wharf which is now used to process passengers for immigration, customs, quarantine and security.

The project was given conditional approval by the Development Consent Authority last week.

Chief Minister Clare Martin said the new facility would better welcome visitors to Darwin Port.

"We've been trying over the last couple of years particularly to grow the number of cruise ships that come to Darwin and this year 45 cruise ships will be coming here," she said.

"Now they're a great boost for the local economy. Each passenger injects about $180 into the economy each day they're here and crew will spend $150 a day."

The new terminal is part of the $1.1 billion waterfront

development.

Technical manager Terry O'Neill said the development needed to be refined before work could start.

"The major conditions to be met -- and these will be the subject of some updated plans -- are more detail on car parking and traffic management, particularly in the management of pedestrian movements," he said.

"The other major issue is to undertake a risk assessment on the security issues that arise from this development."

Building will begin at the start of next year.

That's a lot of money to replace a tent.!

I agree, but they did build a small facility on Stokes Hill wharf, unfortunately this wharf is in poor condition and a decent nudge with a lage vessle could see the whole thing turning pear shaped, I presume they are bulding this expensive tent on Fort Hill wharf
