ON SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER

To speak the truth to power is the role of the adviser,
Ambitious that the listener will then become the wiser.
It doesn’t always work, of course. The power will oft erupt,
And thump its breast, expostulating, “Do not interrupt!”

It happens in the House of Commons, almost every day.
The loyal opposition gives advice to Mrs May;
And halitosis rules supreme and oft will court disaster,
Sometimes by tiny increments. And sometimes things move faster.

And still there is the need, the certainty that truth will out.
To speak the truth to power, regardless of the power’s clout.
To bell the cat, to lay the ghost, to put all things in order;
But, sadly, power will often see the truth as a marauder.

The power is not mine, except to see things as I do,
And offer them as observations; things which all may view,
Or not, as readers might elect. The choice is theirs to make
In peace, I trust; and hopefulness. Both hold until they break.

And when that happens, power has won. The power is volcanic-
As long ago embodied in the saga of Titanic;
When truth spoke unto power, through a solid block of ice.
The truth will out, alas, alack – and calculate the price.

Well said that man.
Telling the truth to the powerful has throughout history been a difficult business, often paid for in heads. Thankfully that currency has been devalued and it is now usually, at least in our western "civilisations", just a job that goes.
But there are still a few who have the integrity and courage to tell the truth as they see it.
The shame is that the man who seems most likely to become our next leader is not one of them.

Oh dear. Immediately after posting #2 I moved on to the resited Gigantic Ship thread via the Home page.
I trust my comment on Mr Johnson's lack of integrity and courage does not cause Barrie's poem to be sidelined to Stormy Weather.
It deserves a wider audience.
