Our Planet and Our Animals.
A Simpleton’s View.
Our Planet is a finite thing. A thing of finite size.
Our population has increased before our very eyes.
The numbers of our people might well vary, even yet.
Until our numbers start to drop, some things we can’t forget.
No scientist am I. The names of gases are not mine,
They do not trickle off my tongue. More likely there is wine
And other food and drink which I am fortunate to have,
Which leads, inevitably, to the matter of the lav.
In youth I was a farmer’s boy. One of my jobs was pigs,
And feeding them and keeping them in routine whirligig.
An older hand, in teaching me, said, “They just fart and snore”.
And what is said of them today has been said long before.
And likewise with the cattle. Even I’ve heard of methane,
As vented by the moo-cows in the meadow down the lane.
We keep them, ‘cos we eat them, all the cattle, pigs and sheep.
And now, if things get out of hand, they’ll all be put to sleep.
No more animals to share the planet where we live.
It is inevitable that there must be take and give,
In seeking how we balance out the assets that we have,
Or else the day will come when we no longer need the lav.
