Since the 28th Nov. I have received 5 phone calls to my mobile phone (Australian number) from various overseas countries. Ambon, Indonesia. Bolivia. Lithuania. Maldives and Armenia. Each call lasts only one or two rings and then a hangup.
Has anyone else experienced this or knows what the hell is going on.
It must be a scam of some kind, but what.

I think they want you to ring them back and then you get charged some exorbitant fee for the call. Best thing is just hang up.

John T
They beat me to hanging up by only letting the phone ring once or twice,
and on seeing an overseas code I am a bit wary on answering anyway.
Thankyou for the answer.

Regularly get similar calls from Albania and Romania, if you call back its to a premium number and you will be charged accordingly. I was caught for 19 Euro as I automatically rang back. Lesson Learned.

I believe that this is a world-wide thing, and it certainly happens here in Ireland regularly as you will have experienced no doubt. Your conclusion is correct of course -- that is exactly what the caller wants you to do, but I am told that the "caller" is actually a bot that dials a series of numbers not an actual person, and so it could be making thousands of such calls every day to phone numbers purchased on the Dark Web. I work on the principle that if the caller number has a "00" prefix followed by a country code that I don't recognise then I don't answer.

Had quite a few of these calls, so I block the number & delete it, but firstly if I don`t recognise the callers number I ignore it. If it`s genuine they will call back I suppose.

One of the benefits of being long retired and having no interests in business, if the caller ID is not that of the UK or Canada where I have family or, at one time, Russia where I had friends, I too just ignore it. I did for a while look up the country code to see where the call came from, but I stopped bothering with that a long time ago. I don't know anyone in Romania or Outer Mongolia or wherever and I don't want to! (Thumb)

I live in Scotland and used to get about a dozen calls a day, from what I call spam numbers. on my home phone, My immediate family are the only people who know my mobile number. which they use to call me.
I don't get any spam numbers on that phone YET
.
THE LAW CHANGED A FEW MONTHS AGO IN UK SO THE MAJORIY OF THESE CALLS STOPPED. THAT ORIGINATED IN UK.

However I still get 00 numbers from all over mainly EGYPY. ROMANIA LIBERIA
AND AUSTRALIA BERMUDA AND A LOT FROM AMERICA

I NEVER call these numbers back. but I check them on a WHO CALLED ME SITE THAT GIVES INFORMATION ABOUT THE PHONE NUMBERS WHO CALLED
vast majority spammers. but the one that amuses me is the Australian who
calls usually a couple of times a month originates from BRISBANE ISLAND
IN Australia, IVE been in Brisbane many times with SHAW SAVILL SHIPS BUT THAT WAS BACK IN THE 1960s.
I don't remember anything about Brisbane island if such a place exists,

Why phone someone on the other side of the world

I suspect that when one of these companies get access then theve all got access selling numbers to each other.

good health to all foe the new year 2020 and beyond, GEM.

I bought a set of Panasonic KX-TGJ424E phones . This screens whatever you want it to . Only calls from my "Phonebook" setting come straight through . Other calls are asked to press "1"(or a number/numbers of your choice) if they wish to continue the call - Robotic calls can not do this There are other settings - overseas calls etc . Have not had any spam calls since I bought it . A bit expensive , but worth it .

Most such calls are computer-dialed calls by telephone solicitors, some might be "live", others are recorded "robocalls". The computer places a group of calls simultaneously, if too many people (or their message machines) answer, the rest of the calls get dumped, which is why you only get one ring or two, or no one is there when you pick up the phone.

Just had two Amazon Prime scam calls from different numbers.

On BT phone, to block the last number which called you, dial 1572 and press 1 when asked. Listen to number and, if agreed, then consent.

To block with BT online and view/manage your blocked list go to:
https://www.bt.com/help/security
and read the advice.

There's an outfit who list scam and harassing calls:
