Outward bound in Southampton Water for the Caribbean. I hope there is enough smoke for our purist members.

Well I think the probability it is the reverse..if she is outward bound down Southampton Water she will essentially be heading south east, looking at the smoke I think its probably more to the south and west!!. Probably had a nice build up of residue while she had been in Southampton and they hadnt blown tubes for a while!!

If Chusan is heading south or south east then it must be a northerly wind, perhaps northeast for the smuts to come over the starboard side.

Remember altering course in mid ocean for "blowing tubes", it could be quite dramatic, and if the mate had the decks freshly holystoned one took steps to avoid blackening them.

You are quite right, when I said that I was thinking of the direction of the smoke from the ship, Tanker strikes again!!. And the Chief Officer had perhaps been pampering his decks by not blowing tubes until they got down into the Channel itself.
