a japanese cargo ship on tuesday foiled a pirate attack in the straits of malacca days after pirates raided 2 u.n. charterd vessles in the same area.
the pirates followed the 26,989t vessle and tried to board it from the stern.
a duty officer raised the alarm and the crew turned on the floodlights and sprayed the pirate craft with fire hoses

Take a tip from someone who's been there and done that. Do not use fire hoses against pirates who could very well be armed with machine guns or worse. Most of the piracy undertaken in the Malacca and Singapore Straits is the work of rouge elements of the Indonesian armed forces who mount anti-pirate patrols by day but hoist a different flag by night.

A couple of Molotov Cocktails thrown in their boat may do the trick.
A Little fuel and some liquid soap makes a hell of a weapon.
