The EEC has demanded that the Polish Government immediately produce a credible plan to "restructure" the Polish Shipbuilding industry. If this is not forthcoming the three Polish yards will be required to repay the £870 million of illegal aid that they have received during the past two years. Despite this huge hand out, the yards are still loss making and the EEC requirement would bankrupt them.

The Polish government is claiming that EEC competition rules should not apply, because of emotional significance of Gdansk, Gydnia and Szczecin to the Polish people. It is not surprising that Poland has undercut British yards for contracts to build British ferries and fisheries patrol vessels etc. If you are going to break the rules, you may as well do so in a big way.

In 1991 H&W was contrcated by the EU to modernise the shipyards in Gadansk and to act as consultants on the evaluatation of Polish shipbuilding. We did such a good job we bit the dust 8 years later but at least we taught the Poles all our tricks for screwing money out of the EEC. Only snag was the Poles got far too good at it and we wound up shooting ourselves in both feet. (Night)
