Hi all

I am in the process of researching a wreck and needed a bit more info on the builder and the engine builder. As so far the info I have on each is somewhat limited.

The engine builder is Muir & Caldwell of Glasgow and the ship builder is ***ming and Swan of Glasgow. Some reports state the vessel as being built solely by ***mings, whilst others state her being built in partnership with Swan, ie ***ming and Swan. Does anyone know the time periods involved for the forming of ***mimg & Swan??

Any info on either of these company's would be very much appreciated.

***ming and Swan, Blackhill Dock, Glasgow, seem to have been active between 1868 and 1878 building a total of fourteen small vessels mainly 'puffers' and barges. Three of these were engined by Muir and Caldwell.

Muir and Caldwell, Glasgow were a substantial engineering firm building marine engines from 1868-1899 but also steam deck machinery (winches, capstans) and steam steering gear etc

Thanks eddyw, very much appreciated. The dates you have given would show that the vessel was infact built during the period of collaboration between ***ming and Swan and not ***mings alone at Blackhill Dock.

If you go on the Scottish Shipbuilding Database and select the builders ***ming & Swan or ***ming D M you will get a list of all the vessels they built.
