Hi all. It is with great sadness to announce that Robbie Henderson has crossed the bar on the 27th April. He had been unwell for some months and went suddenly at the end aged only 67. Robbie leaves behind a wife Liz whom he married in 2014.
As a teenager Robbie worked on the local fishing boats out of Wick with his grandfather. On leaving school he took up an apprentice job in a local butcher shop but got itchy feet not long afterwards. A few years in the RAF communication branch followed. Then in 1980 he joined the MSV Tharos as a radio officer. This vessel supported the Piper Alpha oil rig until the disaster in 1988. In 1984 Robbie decided to follow a deep sea career and joined Denholm's Wellpark as radio officer. It was on his second ship Cast Muskox that I met and sailed with Robbie not realising that he lived about 1 mile away. We become lifelong close friends. He stayed with the Denholm group until 2002. Changing from RO to ETO in 1986. After leaving Denholm's he moved to the cruise sailing ships in the South Pacific as chief electrician. A few years later he moved to the large cruise ships with Holland America and was there 25 years. Retiring about 3 years ago as chief electrician on the Alaska/West USA run.
Liz has granted permission to attached details of his sea service with the Denholm group. Though most of his time was on the ALCAN ships he did get around a considerable number of ships within the fleet.

His funeral service will be held in Wick on Monday 9th May.

A good shipmate, and general all round fine fellow. I signed him on Friendly Ranger 28/6/86 and off Friendly Carrier 24/7/87.

Please pass my condolences to his widow and any family members, I can't make it to wick for Monday.

Thanks and Best Regards,

Roddie MacKenzie.

Sailed with Robbie so many times over his years on the Alcan Ships. Robbie's mood was always the same, he always got on well with everybody on the ship. As Roddie said a good ship mate and friend.

I have passed on this sad news to some of people at Holland America.

It's evident from the description that he had a remarkable life and career at sea. It's amazing how he touched the lives of those around him and formed lifelong friendships.
By the way, I stumbled upon this thread while I was going through the difficult process of planning funerals for a family member. During my online search, I came across Memorials For Companions, which offers some meaningful options for honoring and remembering loved ones. It might be worth considering if you're looking for additional ways to commemorate Robbie's life.
