I have tried researching the subject and have had no success in connecting him with a named shipping company. He was located in Newcastle upon Tyne during his working life c.1870-1900.

Can anyone with better knowledge of the NE Coast help me.

Rowland Mawson died 30 March 1895. A newspaper report (Newcastle Evening Chronicle 30 March 1895) says he was in partnership with Mr Daniel Stephens as shipowners, and carried on a large business. He had a connection to the Blyth Shipbuilding Company Ltd as he is listed as director in (Newcastle Journal 22 March 1883).

Depending on what you are looking for, you might find him listed as shipowner in Lloyd's Register of Shipping here:
Digital Resources | Archive & Library | Heritage & Education Centre It will mean looking at each volume to see if shipowners are listed (they usually are) and take it from there. I had a quick look in the 1885 edition and he is not listed.

A newspaper article covering his funeral makes mention of several companies

Stephens & Mawson, Newcastle which aside owning vessels also managed the Red R Steamship Co
Stephens, Mawson & Goss, Newport, Mon. shipowners
Mordey, Carney & Co
Blyth Shipbuilders

That should give you a lead into Lloyd's Register

Thank you, both Dave and Bill. Living out here on the edge of the world (Vancouver) with hardly any links in the UK I am very dependent on Google and kond friends like you.

I'll use your leads and see what more I can find.

I am unsure if the list includes the vessels of the Newport company
Further investigation confirms both fleets are included but be aware that also included, are several managed vessels owned by smaller and one ship concerns.

Hi Nick,

Have spent a few days pulling together data on the aforementioned data.

If you give me a contact email, I will forward it to you. Looks like the old private messaging system has been lost among many other aspects of this once unique but now commercialised site, owned by those who haven't got a clue what it's all about, other than dollar signs.

Bill the PM system is now referred to as 'Conversations'. Like before, click on the person's avatar and you will see a line of headings (Follow Ignore Start Conversation) on the line below the avatar. Click on Start Conversation and you are away.
Good luck
