See in today’s news that we have despatched a patrol vessel (HMS Tyne) to monitor and shadow a Russian vessel (Smolnyy Perekop) as she transits the Channel.
Russian vessel said to be over forty years old and a cadet ship with minimal armaments.
Can’t help but ask why!
Is the Russian vessel a threat or are they all potential immigrants?

It's just the establishments way of telling us they are keeping us safe from potential threats, even on Christmas Day. Of course it might have been a diabolical plot by the Russians to screw the RNs Christmas up. An over flight by the RAF would have done the job just as well, and everyone would have been home in time for tea.

Is this really news? HMS Tyne is predominantly a Fisheries Protection vessel and was more than likely in the area, perhaps they were checking to see if they had any fishing lines o'side!

As far as I understand it (I am no expert) the RN will "escort" any naval vessels from countries that are not members of NATO as they pass through UK or NATO territorial waters. Other NATO members are required to do the same I believe, not because the interloper is deemed a threat or that they don't have every right to be there under rights of passage. So a Russian naval training ship would be treated in exactly the same way as would the Russian aircraft carrier (and it's tug!), but they would not be "shadowed" or "monitored".
