"Cruise ship repels Somali pirates

A cruise ship sailing off Somalia has beaten back gunmen in speedboats who opened fire on it in an apparent pirate attack which terrified passengers.
At least two boats closed in on the Seabourn Spirit, firing automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades at the cruise liner."

Wonder how large the media will blow up this story!

Surprised at the audacity so far off the coastline (expect this to happen in the Straits of Malacca) but as Somalia appears ungovernable maybe we shouldn't be surprised.

Fortunately no one was injured or killed - could just imagine the headlines if just one passenger died and several were injured - e.g. "15 killed and injured". A free press is something to be treasured - unfortunately it is now used in a trashy manner. I await tomorrow's headlines!

I believe that a number of Navies that transit the area at times treat it as a potentially hostile area because of the number of Cigarette and similar boats around. With their high speed and low silhoutte and the generally benevolent sea conditions they can prove a real threat to even a warship.

The nuclear waste carrying Fisher boats were modified in 1998 against pirates
i think several water cannon and some small mounted arms were added

Whilst nobody wants to see anyone killed or injured, maybe what the shipping world needs is a pirate attack on a cruise ship, this would generate a public outcry. The ordinary seafarer has been puting up with this danger for years with little or no action from goverments. The IMO did publish a paper on the issue, but it is not heavy enough to cause any injury to a pirate evan when thrown from a great height!!

Attempted Piracy

Just heard about it here at home via email. Thought I would jump onto the site and scoop you all with the information. Wrong, you were a couple of steps ahead of me. But what did I expect? Alan Hill Bridgeport, Pa. USA
