Hello to all,

I wondered if anyone out there sailed on the Shoush with my father, Gareth Roberts, who was master. He was on board between Oct 78 and Jan 81. He also skippered two other BP ships which were chartered to the Iranian Government - the Minab and the Sivand.

He was a wanted man in Iran as he turned the ship around in the Straits Of Hormuz after they were boarded by the Iranian Army who wished to "escort" through the Straits. They installed some mortars on the deck - with heat seeking missiles! Needless to say that missiles and oil tankers don't go together, but a heat seeking missile would gleefully find its way down the funnel to the engine room! He threw thr army off, turned the ship around and scarpered! They never forgave him for that!

I'm sure he did too..!

Another experience he had was to take the first tanker (for eons) into a communist bound Rumanian port. I think the ship was the British Loyalty.

He was asked beforehand to draw site maps of the port, dock facilities and naval base etc.

He never mentioned this to anyone (including mum) until one day a great big limousine with blacked out windows arrived outside the house in Colwyn Bay. It was the Ministry of Defence to quiz him on his drawings. Even then, he didn't let on!

I'd love to know more about it though.

From an engineers perspective the 'Skoosh' was a nightmare. We reckoned that the one of the dockyard cranes just dropped a bundle of pipes one day, and they just built a ship around them.

Not too bad when I was 3/E on her apart from when the J/E changed over the fuel tanks without checking for water! The calorific value of H2O is not good and we stopped for quite a few hours!

During the Iran Iraq war, the Shoush was siezed by the revolutionary guard and used for floating storage off Sirri Island. I remember running avaition kerosene into the gulf. Very odd to be sitting on an "Ity" boat discharging refined product into a VLCC. The Shoush was light ship at the time so it was like being moored to a steel cliff.

I was on the Skoosh , up the Gulf, while Iraq and Iran were going at it big-time. After Singapore, only volunteers went back up the Gulf on her. I said no it's not for me. So good old BP sent me to the Falklands instead, thanks a lot.

My wife and I sailed with your father and Mother a couple of times on the Shoush. My wife was very friendly with your mother and everyone was a friend of your Fathers.

Vital Sparks. You are not quite right about the Shoush when she was off Sirri Island. I joined her Dubai to do my VLCC time as mate. We went over Singapore to discharge and had just cleared the Malacca Straits back to the Gulf when we were ordered back to Singapore. We spent about 10 days in the Eastern anchorage altering the pipe sytems and cleaning the ship up to be able to carry clean products. On the passage back to the Gulf we washed all the tanks with gas oil, and then shipped the fenders when we got to Sirri. It was all well planned and quite a work up as I recall. The time at Sirri was interesting with about 100 Revolutionary Guards on the Island. To start with we still had booze and bacon on board but that was stopped on my second time out there !! It was quite interesting out there at times, especially when the AA guns opened up on the Island. Luckily they didnt point them in our direction !! I joined the ship in Mina Saqr in Januaury 1982, Captain Dwight, Elton Johns Uncle, was the OM. Mike Gordon took over as OM in Singapore and I went master in August 1982 and left the ship in Singapore in May 1983, after we had handed over to the Sivand.

I sailed on the Shoush late 1979. It was only my second trip to sea and being a lowly deckhand I did not get to know your father but he was the Captain and his signature is in my discharge book.
The Shoush however was not one of my favourite ships and I have been on a few as I am still at sea today.
