Hi all
I was an Asst Purser on "Andes" until her demise in May 1971.
I can recall the names of 3 of the 4 suites, namely Asturias, Almanzora, Alcantra
But I can't recall the name of the fourth!!
Can anybody help?

Spelling Sir!!!! ALCANTRA... that is how it is spoken. The spelling is ALCANTARA. :)

Could your fourth ATLANTIS? These were all RML names.

1971. Captain Jim Holt by any chance? I knew he was master of ANDES, but I don't know when.

Thank you Stephen - sorry for my spelling "gaff"
I did consider Atlantis but am not convinced. The "one sitting only" restaurant was called the Atlantis Restaurant so doubtful they would create confusion with a suite of the same name.
I did sail with a Mr Holt, who at the time was Chief Officer of the "African Prince", part of Prince Lines. However, I doubt he was ever a Captain on RMS "Andes", as by 1971 she was in razor blades. He could have been skipper of later ships called Andes with other shipping companies.
For my original question, I guess I'll have to find a copy of RMS "Andes" layout plans, copies of which were issued to passengers as part of their embarkation papers. I think I still have a copy in the loft!
Thanks anyway.

Ruari,

Got it............. ARAGUAYA! So obvious too!

I did four jobs for Jim Holt in 1988 - 1991. He was owner of Havelet Marine, Totnes. He was a shipbroker. I was 'delivery master'. He told me about ANDES. I guess I was not thinking the right not Andes. Went to his funeral too. Are two of my ANDES paintings. Fine looking vessel. The only other RML master I knew was Freddie Boize. I am 100% he would NEVER have been on board ANY passenger ship!

Ruari, did you move over to Shaw Savill in the STAR or OCEAN MONARCH?

Stephen
Stephen - thanks for that all above.
ARAGUAYA may have been but still uncertain. I was Asst Purser on Andes cruise liner from 1969 to 1971.
Nice ship paintings too.
In May 1971, when "Andes" went for scrap in Holland, I and the officers of 40 other ships (passenger through to cargo) found ourselves on the beach, so my career on the seven seas came to and end, and I went to work for a brewery!!
Good morning,

Don't be uncertain. The Four Suites were called ARAGUAYA, ALMANZORA, ALCANTARA & AUSTRIAS.

1959 - 1960. Major refit at De Schelde. The Smokeroom was renamed the Warwick Room. The Grand Hall and the Observation Lounge was renamed the Princess Lounge (after Princess Margaret). The Seahorse Inn shows the company 'arms' represented from the seahorse. The new bar by the swimming pool was the Mermaid Bar. The four luxury suites remembered early ships from the South America service with the names ARAGUAYA, ALCANTARA, AUSTRIAS and ALMANZORA. Another former ship was remembered. Inevitably ANDES' predecessor as full-time liner, the immensely popular ATLANTIS, had to be represented and her name was given to the Restaurant. Part of the former second class restaurant was rebuilt as an exclusive restaurant was named the Galleon Grill.

See page 179L MACQUEEN'S LEGACY -Ships of the Royal Mail Line - Volume Two.

Better the job at with the Brewery. You would have end up these horrible monster cruise ships... with 6,000 passengers. Most of the staff today are youngsters and do not know the old ships.

I have posted a photo of ANDES berthed at New York in the 1950. The ships shown on the slide did were not named. Took a while to work out was it was! The photo is in the SN Gallery. Good luck if you can find it!!!

Thank you Stephen. Have now found my copies of Stuart Nichol's "MacQueen's Legacy", which, of course, confirms your suggestions. Stuart, who I knew well when I was working in Royal Mail Lines HO, prior to seagoing, sadly died a few years ago, and very much "before his due time".
Interestingly, one of your photos shows the Kingsholm and I have snaps of her sister ship, Gripsholm when passing up the River Sheldt en route to Antwerp in 1959.
And I quite like this shot of RMS "Andes" (©) which I took in Corfu in 1966.

Ruari,

Beautiful shot of the ship at Corfu. Look at those beautiful covered promenade decks! I swear, this design is better than any modern cruise ship. You can have your own private balcony... 10 x 6 ft!!!! I'd prefer Andes' prom decks. Great for walking or just lounging, The deck with the green awnings looks even better! Sun on boat deck.. some more sun but still more deck place, Better still, close to the lounges and bars! Was she fully airconditioned when the big refit? I would guess.

Did you sail with Des Kirkpatrick (Ch Purser)? Queen of Bermuda/Ocean Monarch and I believe he was in Andes as
well. Here with my vessel.. CALSHOT. I did not see ANDES... I was in CALSHOT in 1991.

No, Ben Traynor was chief Purser on "Andes" certainly for all the time I was. 1966 through to end in 1971.
The picture you posted above was the Warwick Room. The main lounge was called Princess Lounge.
Good morning Ruari,

Des was in ANDES before your time and he was the Shore Excursion Manager.

Hello Ruari,
RML Andes was scrapped in Ghent Belgium in 1971, I had been at sea for about 8 months she was my first trip to sea. I went to Shaw Saville & Albion, (Slow starvation and agony).

Peter.
Ruari, do you recall Peter Stroud? I would be delighted to hear of any anecdotes about him you (or anyone else) might be able to share. He spent his whole career at sea with Royal Mail Lines, starting as a Lift Boy on the Atlantis (formerly Andes) in 1932. He was Cruise Director on the Andes of 1939 from 1959 to 1965, (when he left to join the Amazon as her Purser), and her Entertainments Director for a three-week cruise in June/July, 1968 - his last job afloat.
