Pictures taken from Tasmania Star while bunkering in Aden. Note engine room lube oil had to be stowed on deck, aft of the engineers mess.
P&O's 'Strathclyde' was full of Italian imigrants on their way to Oz.
Aden was always a buzz of activity back then. Ships passing through. Ships waiting for bunker berths. Tugs, Cutters, Dows and Bum Boats. If it could float it was there.
Picture of Arab boatmen running moorings ashore in the canal.
Nonstop chipping, painting and soojee. On the BA flyer's we could work regular 98 hour weeks. Cargo hold preperation outward bound and all over repaint in BA and homeward bound. Two weeks in London and the PLA dockers would ensure we sailed looking like sh#t again.
The Mendoza Star - ex 'Chatham', was the best job I was on. Small and compact she always looked a picture as she plied her trade on the fruit runs from London to Santos and salad runs to the Medi and back.
I was on the 'English Star' for a trip. Paddy Cinco was bosun. She and the old Royal Star always looked a mess.
