Looking at later photos those port along the WL appear to have been plated over. In 2001 I was in little PACIFIC PRINCESS. the only cabin available was an 'inside' cabin. I was happy to find that I had a porthole and it was an outside cabin. The ship sailed and later went down to the cabin, the porthole with the deadlight was down hard tight. It became an 'inside'!

i recall the good ship achille lauro which i had a pleasant cruise on - despite her age - with all the wooden paneling etc etc my porthole not only could open back in the day - but in a heavy sea it was quite exciting to see half under the water and half over - so yes portholes were a lot lower !
