I think that the Loire originally ran into the Mediterranean.

The source of the Loiret (at only 12 km long, the shortest of the tributaries of the Loure) is at Orleans, a long way from the Cevennes.

The Quaternary period seems to be the ice age up until now. I remember reading somewhere that the Thames in those early days was part of the Rhine delta, could it be that the Loire was part of the same system?

Whatever it was, it all culminated in a beautiful run up the river and a memorable booze up in Nantes for me!
