Was in Cape Town loading sugar with Strickline , Turkistan , 1973 , we had to spend 3 days in the Herongracht hotel . Maybe wrong spelling , Opposite the railway station , as the ship had to be fumigated prior to loading ,the view from the top of table mountain was fabulous . There was a record shop on the main street where you would get a free LP after you bought a certain amount , have just recently sold some LPS that were bought there at the time.
The hotel was 5 star and we turned up for dinner at night in casual clothes not known that the hotel was one where you should be suited and booted .
We were given a table in a corner where we would not be noticed , 3 eng from Amble near Newcastle ordered lobster Thermidor as he had never tried it , took one taste and decide it was not to his taste .
He would come down on watch with mug of tea and jam sandwiches.

They did the same with us, Registan, 1972, for fumigation, I had the Dubious "honour" of being first back in the E-R to start a Genny and get the Vent fans running, They allegedly used a higly Toxic gas to fumigate. We where in a High rise hotel, so could have been the same one?.

It was directly across from the railway station , always remember the segregated areas , doorways into building, seats you were allowed to sit on.

i have a sister who stays there - vancouver - she says its beautiful but from coming into port cape town has to top it

Got to admit Capetown and New York take a lot of beating.

It is a great shame that I never got there! Very nice photos.

Regarding Vancouver/Seattle, the first inkling you got that you were nearing port were snow-capped Olympic Mountains peeking over the horizon and the ever stronger smell of pine. On one such day, a pod of Orcas breached abeam of the ship, a magnificent sight to behold! The only "downer" in Vancouver were the innumerable tramps and junkies lining up to donate blood near the docks!

That view of Table Mountain was the view from my cabin window so many times in the three or four years trading that coast on an oil products tanker. It's a view that can't be beaten - some others may come close but I have yet to find them!

Here are another couple of pics of Capetown a wee bit older than the last ones I posted, loading stores on the Burmah Zircon (Denholms) my first trip in1974. Thats almost 50 year ago seems like yesterday. They were slides taken with a Zenith SLR camera which I later replaced with a Monolta. Still have all the slides I took while at sea and have digitally converted them.

Not as cosmopolitan as Capers and smaller in size is the port of Lyttleton (south island Kiwi), a real quirky and beautiful port and a good run ashore with more to it than just the seaman's pubs. Me and the sparky came back one night after chuck out time and somehow ended up onboard a Russian fish factory ship moored opposite us (might have something to do with her sparky who was a blonde goddess but alas she was hitched up with their onboard "commissar "), anyway they were great hosts and eventually we crawled back to our vessel after a bellyfull of Russian brandy, smoked /cured fish and black bread and no nokey! Death warmed up all morning but after a few lunchtime "liveners" felt good enough to take some jams/marmalade across to them which they eagerly accepted.
