British flag on THPV Bembridge 1938 - part I

Hello,

Now I will show you how we keep our promises. As you remember from my previous posts - I promised that we will have permanently a British flag back on Bembridge. I written here many times about British flag that we intend to place permanently on our Bembridge. Due to our local regulations and because now Bembridge is registered in Poland we are obliged to wear a Polish flag on her flag mast. So we have it.

Our flag mast is not original - it is from our vessel but it is not that one which was mounted on her in 1938. That one was very long, made from exotic wood and was ended by Trinity House Lion. We still have a brass basement from that flag mast. We hope one day we will find such a lion.

Every TH vessel had two such a lions - two the same ones. One was on the top of flag mast and second one was on the peak of vessel's bell holder.

I attached a whole set of bell ex other Trinity House vessel build in 30' - you can see that lion. Our Bembrige had the same set.
Whole set was made by G.BOCOCK & CO. LTD. Ship Lamp Manufacturers and Naval Brass founders from Birmingham, 17&18 Mott Street. This company is better known as Seahorse so their characteristic brand.

Our flag mast is original Trinity House one. We know that because on the top there is a round steel plate with three screw holes - they are not in the regular places but in the same places like in case of lion staying on Patrol's bell. Mounting screws are not in regular triangle because of lion's legs. When you will take off that lions and place on the top of our today flag mast than it is suit it perfectly. Our today flag mast is very old too - its brass basement is very old - most probably whole unit is coming from another TH vessel.

Ok, so let's come back to the flag. Definitively a Polish flag must be on our basic flag mast.

We were looking for a solution where we can place a British flag on Bembridge. You know we have on her stern BEMBRIDGE LONDON - not BEMBRIDGE SZCZECIN so it is looking very strange that over London we have Polish flag.

Once again old pictures of Bembridge brought us a solution. Please look at attached picture from 1959. You can see on her rear mast a gaff. Under a gaff we can see a British flag. I looks that for passages flag was over there. In the port on the flag mast. Maybe I am wrong - but we have many pictures of Bembridge - sometimes from the same time - on some of them flag in on the flag mast, sometimes under a gaff.

So we find a solution to place back a gaff. One my friend given me a boom from old yacht from 1930. Yacht do not exist many years but its boom was staying still in marina's warehouse. So we took it and slightly converted for our purposes. A stainless steel brace used before to place a blocks - being sticked to a side of our boom we converted for a holder to be sticked on Bembridge's rear mast. So we will use to mount the rear end of boom inside it.

On three next pictures you can see prepared boom - sorry gaff to be mounted on our rear mast.

British flag on THPV Bembridge 1938 - part III

G 09 - 10 - mounting of main rope supporting our gaff to be in correct vertical position
G 11 - a great moment - first time from 2004 a British flag is going up to be here for ever. We have a promise from British Embassy from Warsaw that a new nominated recently British Ambassador will come to us (during his next visit in Szczecin) to officially hoist up a British flag. Now it is not officially :)

G 12 - it is so low because gaff is fresh painted - on Monday I will move it to the top as high as it will be only possible
G 13 - so a final composition - BEMBRIDGE LONDON on her stern, British flag under a gaff, Polish flag on our flag mast.

What else in the future - we are planing to make several copies of Smith's Dock Co. Ltd. flags (as you remember we have one original from 30') and one will be placed under a British flag - a bit smaller like that one of course - so it will be nowadays only one place in the World where you will see a Smith's Dock Co. Ltd. flying flag - it is a pity but it will be a truth.

On the end we will make a wooden long flag mast with TH Lion on the end. But first we must catch that Lion.

British flag on THPV Bembridge 1938 - part IV

G 14 - whole vessel with a "new" flag
G 15 - only one British flag today on the vessel in Polish fleet - a history came back on her board - an old British Pilot Cutter with her original flag ... what ever we will do with her in Poland than we will not change her history.

Somebody can ask - why? What is a sense? It is just our big respect for her, her history and a so many human beings being present on her board by so many years of her service. What is very nice she is back in service once again.

We have now on her board our office, conference center and first of all a nice Museum dedicated to Smith's Dock Co. Ltd. Trinity House London, and various periods from her history.

Best greeting Rafal

PS. I have several more pictures to be published - so soon more...

Heating season 2011-2012

This summer is slowly ended. We have now cold days - so our crew asked to increase a temperature inside. So we officially started a heating season on Bembridge. Our boson Christoph every day at 7:00 is starting a fire in both our fire places. Within 30 minutes every where we have a warm air.

01 - our machinery room so today main conference room in a special arrangement for a group of 30 people with chairs and tables (that anchor in the middle is a nice element in the center of our conference room - so other like our "cinema" arrangement.

02 - a view via anchor's ring

03 - our fire place

04 - the fire

05 - second fire place in Pilot saloon - you can see on it a Pilot's Flame Colored Signal Lamp - it is waiting here for mounting on the roof of our wheel house - but first we must made a basement. Over this lamp you can see an anchor lantern ex Bembridge too.

Heating season 2011-2012 part II

06 - you can see the fire place "tower" a bit closer
07 - and its fire giving inside of our Pilot Saloon luxury light and worm atmosphere - you can expect that for a moment any pilot after his service will come to rest here...
08 - here our Pilot Flame Colored Signal Lamp is lighting by 4 bulbs - each of 100 W. It is a very strong lighting as you see
09 - 10 - a nice competition - natural sunny light coming from our portholes and skylights, fire from fire place and strong light of Pilot Signal Lamp ... of course upper anchor lantern has own lighting too - but here is off of course.

We are looking for anything concerning Trinity House, Smith's Dock and our Bembridge for our board museum - any help very welcome.

I started a new thread concerning Marconi transmitter Gannet II to find it together with our receiver Marconi Guardian II - built in 1958. The thread is in The Radio Room area.

Soon more pictures ...

I just cannot believe that this is the same space in which I, and others, spent so many, many hours waiting for a ship!!!
Simply amazing, Rafal, somebody should give you a medal.

Dear Hugh, your kind sentences are always the best medal for all of us.

It will be nice to see you once again inside of that Pilot Saloon. Once again means first time from the time when you were here last time.

There is a central main ventilator inside - it is a square box with 4 special shifted small plates. This box is connected with wide pipe going on the deck and there was before a nice huge vent pipe.

I hear the story that one Master of TH hates Pilots so much that he was sending any seaman to that vent pipe on the deck when any Pilot was required to reach a next ship. Than seaman was placing his head inside that vent pipe and than he started to shout: "Neeext ooooneee pleeeeaaaaseee!" Than there were no doubts - everybody was woken up. Than Master was very happy.

Ready gaff with British flag

Hello,

Our boson Christoph removed all frames used to mount a gaff and all ropes.

Flag was moved up because our gaff is dry and ready.

Whatever anybody feels - gaff looks in my opinion just great ant it is exactly what we wanted.

Second story is a flag. For some of you it will be very important, for some not.

For us - so new crew - it is something what we wanted to return to our vessel - it was a missing element in her restoration and our will to express a respect to her country of building, country of working and first off all to a nationality of her crew members by so many years.

There are still many missing elements ... slowly... they will return

Some more missing elements

We did not saw any pictures of that two "clocks". We found on the wall a place where was different structure of paint showing a surround "shadows" made by attached clocks or clock and lamp by many years. Additionally each circle had two screw holes. We hope it was looking like that before - but we are not sure of course.

PS1. First Christoph attached two wooden shields
PS2. Than I taken home both watches. Than I restored both of them - now they are working with very high accuracy, they are polished and painted (sprayed) by thin varnish to protect their shining for a long time. It taken several days but this shining brass looks great.
PS3. Today we had an atmospheric pressure 1018
PS4. Time is displayed perfectly too
PS5. Now this part of Pilot Saloon looks great - a good taste is really appreciated by this place

Soon more details will be come back to Bembridge. Best greeting Rafal

New brochure of THPV Bembridge 1938

Hello,

Winter is coming and soon we will be covered by snow.

We are now preparing whole vessel for winter. The last deck works are in progress. 2011 was a nice year for all of us. We moved, we well placed our office on board. We are a first company in Poland having an office on museum vessel, we are a first conference center and first Museum on board in our Westpommeranian district. In Gdansk they have SV Soldek - much younger as Bembridge - but with Szczecin on her stern. There is only museum on board.

During 2011 we started with several conferences on board - all of them were international - and all were successful. Everybody who is coming on board for a first time is shocked - Bembridge berthed alongside of our Egyptian Quay do not look so big. Nobody can even imagine that she had so big space under a main deck where is our office, Officers Messroom, Galley, Stores and Pilot Saloon. For everybody who is for the first time it is impossible to see all details. Everybody must come back second even third time to know how to walk inside and to understand how she is organized.

We proved that it was a brilliant idea to use a space not required for our daily activity. What is very nice we connected the same are to be used as conference center and museum space - so it can not be used in better way. When we do not have any conference than we are using whole vessel to have a various meetings with our customers, suppliers and partners. We have many visitors on board. Bembridge become to be a place what we intended to organize - it is a cultural heart of our harbour. Most of meeting and conferences have a maritime character and all of them are promoting maritime culture and first of all maritime and harbour industry.

We are now organizing finally whole real museum area - so former Pilots No. 4 - 7 under a Pilot Saloon and Galley's Stores, Pilots No. 1,2 and 3 in superstructure under a Wheelhouse and Wheelhouse.

We still have several things to improve in Pilot Saloon but all works will be done now during winter. We hope that Museum will be ready to the end of this year.

We are still looking for a different things for our Museum. We will drive still this year to UK to collect some of them. We hope still to find any missing things for our vessel. Many our Friends in UK are trying to help us with all these meters.

Because our conference area is now ready - so our Agnieszka, who is responsible for that activity (and our museum too) issued a nice brochure. It is in Polish but now you can see that this sad empty rusty hull found in Gillingham waiting for breaking up - now is again a fully working and living vessel.

Please look at this brochure. It was prepared three months ago, and only printed recently. So on the front page (Page 1) you can see her look of today - you can not see only a last alternation - so gaff on rear mast and British Flag under it. Under a main picture there is in Polish: TRAINEE, PRESENTATIONS, CONFERENCES in unique interior of museum British vessel.

Than two pages from inside - Page 2 and Page 3 ant its looks together so Page 2-3. Inside there is a short history of Bembridge - full history in English is available on www.bembridge.pl. There is only one mistake - the upper left picture is wrong - here normally is a picture with HMS Courageous - but I do not have corrected version - I will update this post on Monday.

On the last page 4 you can see from the top - former machinery room - on the left in arrangement with tables and armchairs for ca 30-40 people and on the right with a cinema arrangement suitable even for 100 people.

Now additional attraction is a fire place - warm space and with nice fire reflection dancing everywhere - especially when it starting to be dark. It is a real nice place for any meeting.

Two pictures bellow - a space of former Master's, Chief Officer & Chief Engineer and First Mate's space - today it is called Linda Sutton Galery and as you see on the walls - there are her drawings made on board in 1972 (for details please look to a history of Bembirdge, or Cosag Marine sub page available from main page).

This area can be arranged again in cinema order for 35 people or with tables for 20 people or like in the case visible on these pictures as a catering area to serve food, coffee, tea, cakes, drinks and the like. To drink coffee or tea and to admire all drawings - it is really a nice moment of every conference - for every tea and coffee break.

On the end Pilot Saloon - perfect area for any club meeting - you can place even 45 people - but in normal way 40 is OK. Of course visible stove is with visible fire and it is giving a warm climate too.

The first question for any newcomer on board: Where The Queen and Prince Filip were sitting in 60'? So Pilot Saloon is really like a magnet for any visitors. So even today it is a heart of our vessel - like in the time when Pilots were playing cards and drinking tea.

All a above three areas are multi medial connected - in the machinery room we have a typical cinema equipment, in the Linda Sutton Gallery and Pilot Saloon we have a nice plasma screens but very hidden - not visible for a first look. Every room has own sound center. Anyway we can broadcast the same on the screens and the same sound everywhere simultaneously. So guy speaking in machinery room can be visible everywhere. We have a huge standing screen (3x4 meters) and special projector to show him outside of our vessel on open air or in near by building. You can hear even the sound from a conference even in the toilets. Everywhere is a professional Wi-Fi network with a very high speed intenret. We have a special camera and microphone to organize a video conferences and Internet transmission of sound and view.

But whole new technology is hidden - for a first look even not visible. Everything is done with a taste and full respect to historical character of our vessel.

Best greeting Rafal

Another brochure and nomination to two rewords

It is nice that now some others in Poland appreciate our project with our old Pilot Cutter Bembridge. After so many problems, stress, doubtful moments, risky adventures - not only her towing from UK to Poland finally we can collect a "flowers" in our "garden".

First you can see a special brochure made by our West Pomeranian Marshal Office - the area of Poland where is Szczecin and THPV Bembridge 1938. It is prepared in three languages: English, French (favorite language for many of you in UK (*)) and of course Polish. This brochure is prepared in perfect quality and its destination is Brussels mainly and EU parliament. You can see over there the best project co-financed with EU founds. It is very prestige to be there. So it is a really reword for our project to be there. And our Old Lady is there - we are as a second the most interesting project in our area. So I presenting a first page and page No. 4-5.
You can read in English so any my further comments are not required,

Next story is related to a special contest made by every year in our West Pomeranian area by our Marshal office. It has nothing to do with EU founds - all companies and their products or activity are ranked there.

We received nomination in two categories: Investment of the year 2011 and Innovation of year 2011. In Investment we received a nomination with two other companies and we did not received a main reword and in Innovation of the year 2011 Bembridge was only one which came over a very strict rules of that contest. Anyway jury decided that because we are only one nominated than we do not need a main reword. Somebody can say - it is a pity but for all of us the most important thing is that we received two nominations as only one company that evening. Everybody nominated received flowers and special diploma. It was given in the occasion of a huge concert in our opera - concert was titled "Children od breakthrough" - it was dedicated to all people starting their business over 20 years ago - so after 1989 when Poland as a first country in soviet camp broken a communism and started to build democracy. It was the most difficult time for a business but many companies are still existing from that time. So in the opera we had all the most important people from our area, members of our Parliament, Senators, Marshal, Presidents of particular cities, and many business people - so like we are calling "the cream on the coffee". So in the eyes of so many important people our Old Bembridge received two nomination almost in the same time.

Investment of the year concerning Bembridge is related to our successful investment in a Museum, Conference Center and Office space made on museum sea going vessel. Innovation is based on the fact that Bembridge is a first imported museum sea going vessel (over 50 years) imported to Poland after WWII, the first restoration of such a vessel in Poland and first floating Museum, Conference Center and Office on such old vessel. I know for many people in UK, Netherlands, France and others it is nothing special but in Poland it is really a first such a case.

So on the picture No. 4 you can see a happy crew member of Bembridge holding two bunches of flowers and two diplomas. On the end you can see our diploma in Polish - two are almost the same. There is Innowacja Roku - means Innovation of the year and Inwestycja Roku - meant Investment of the year and on the end Statek means in Polish vessel.

Still this weekend I will present some last pictures.

Best greeting Rafal

Congratulations Rafal and Team, you must all be very proud of the well deserved awards you have won for your hard work and devotion to the Bembridge project. It is something that Poland must be proud of, and also England, as it is part of our history which you have preserved for future generations to see. So thank you very much from one old Bembridge crew member to the new Bembridge crew and good luck to all of you in the future.
Best wishes Peter.

Pictures from last week - part I

Hello Hugh & Peter,

Thanks a lot for a very kind words. It is nice to receive such a honors from former members of her crew. But we still can not can relax even a little and rest on our laurels.

We are still fighting for davits for Pilot Tender Boats, and for wooden clinker built life boats. Columbus LUM type davits we found on Manxman which will be soon scrapped. There are much bigger ones like on Bembridge but original Samuel Taylor and Sons LUM Type with winches and steering panels.

Only one problem is to find two more or less the same wooden life boats of 19-21 foot - we need them only for display - not to sail anymore.

We found already a vessel with davits for our life boats.

We have a problem to find a workshop to make a vent pipes - we are calling them in Poland "headphones" in simple marine slang.

Ok, let me show you the last pictures of whole vessel before winter time.

01 - just on such a picture for 1000, it was made from far away berthed barges - Bembridge is just in the line between sun and its reflection on the water
02 - 04 next pictures showing Bembridge and her beautiful neighborhood - all buildings are from the end of XIX and beginning of XX century

Pictures from last week dated 17.10 - part II

06 - 07 - these two pictures looks almost the same but ...

I would like to draw your attention for a smoke from our funnel. Everything looks like in 1938 - the smoke pipe is even the same shape. Only today it is not a smoke from diesel engines but from our fire place downstairs in engine room. But it is bringing our vessel to a time when a real smoke will was there.

We will have soon a sound on engine too - I have just bought on e-bay an loudspeaker Admiralty patter from 1950. Tony (Stores) helped me to buy because seller did not wanted to sell it abroad. I will restore it, repair and it will be mounted on her funnel on a front part or on a back part of her main mast. We will play a sound of engine of a huge tugboat - it will be Argus - so tug boat which was towing here Bembridge from UK - Argus has two diesel engines on board. So we will have her sound inside of engine room - played from our music equipment - so when any public group will come to engine room - than it will be possible to hear engine. It will be only occasionally of course and only during a weekends when our office will be off.

When we will use outside loudspeaker?

There will be many occasions when we will switch on all navigational light, we will start a fire in fire place to have a smoke from her "engine" so from funnel and than we will play a sound of engine outside - than when you will walk from her bow (it is a way to reach Bembridge today) than you will have a filling that Bembridge will soon leave our port. Additionally we have three mannequins (but only two uniforms - what we still are looking for) inside of our wheel house. When we will switch on the light inside of bridge and inside of cabins being in the superstructure - than it will underline a vision of ready vessel for sailing.

Soon we will place back her tyfon - so additionally sound of tyfon will be played too.

What else you can expect to have a filling that she is really ready for sailing?

08 - 10 - a view from a bow - you can admire her neighborhood too

Youtube research

Hello,

There were several occasions when someone was placing anything with Bembridge to Youtube

I tried to find all:

1. Movie by donliddard (I know his name of course) titled:
Leigh on Sea Essex replacement of the Essex Yacht Club headquarters THPV Bembridge with the HMS Wilton .

Movie is made on August 2004.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APNdt-PNPi0&feature=youtube_gdata

2. The song composed by Nick Foti and placed on youtube on 10.11.2009. The slide show was made by Nick too. We are very proud of Bembride because there are not so many vessels having a special song written and dedicated to them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC66pSwLHoQ&feature=youtube_gdata

3. Movie made by Paulina Targaszewska from our local newspaper Glos Szczecinski published on their web gs24 titled: The old vessel restored in Szczecin, dated 26.10.2010. That time Bembridge was still in her shipyard (sorry in Polish of course):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmkx_-h39oY&feature=player_embedded

Here you can see all pictures made by her during the same visit:

http://www.gs24.pl/apps/pbcs.dll/ga...CZECIN&ArtNo=891202830&Ref=PH&Params=Itemnr=1

4. 18.02.2011 pictures by GS 24, movie was not published I guess.

http://www.gs24.pl/apps/pbcs.dll/ga...0218&Category=SZCZECIN&ArtNo=662774019&Ref=PH

5. 07.09.2011 next video by GS24 by Paulina Targaszewska:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlBIoNBZhII&feature=player_embedded

and her pictures:

http://www.gs24.pl/apps/pbcs.dll/ga...TYCZNEPERLYPOMORZA1103&ArtNo=968841714&Ref=PH

6. On the end once again the best 4 panoramas in 360 degrees technology of Bembridge made last year - you can switch each of one pointing any arrow on main screen. next summer we will make a new ones.
