THV Penda ex HMS St.Adrian

My late father was Captain of HMS St. Adrian during the period 1942 /1944 before being posted to HMS Prins Albert for D Day ops.

I was interested of the description of armed yacht / armed sloop, and even more interested to find that HMS St.Adrian was built by Camper and Nicholsons in 1927 as a private Motor Yacht St.George , later requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1939.

St.Adrian was sold in 1945, and appears in post war years as THV Penda.

Does anyone know the fate of Penda following Trinity Light service, was she sold off or scrapped.

I have attached a picture of HMS ST.Adrian in Barrow taken in 1942

Regards
David

The old "Patricia" was a Trinity House "yacht" which was a beautiful little ship based at Harwich and used by the Elder Brethren for their periodic inspections of buoyage and lighthouses. She was the first seagoing vessel I went aboard courtesy of my grandfather in the early fifties! Probably the cause of me spending 36 years at sea!

I know how you feel Doug. I remember seeing her alongside in Bristol City Dock ... magnificent. Didn't go aboard, but you could smell the Brasso. Suspect the lads were all round the corner in the Hatchet ... and why not?

A couple of years later, as a lighthouse keeper, I sailed on "Winston Churchill", doing the Cowes area relief. I hoped to stay aboard until the end, but it turned out, going to the Nab, I was first cab off the rank. She was a pretty spiffy ship like all the THVs, but not like Patricia.

Help. I am trying to trace a steam trawler completed for Boston Deep Sea fishing at the outbreak of ww2. She was taken from the stocks by the Admiralty and handed to Trinity House. After the war she was never returned to her original owners. I need her name and any other details. Thanks

The Argus used to be a regular visitor yo Holyhead in the 70's my dad had left her then and done a stintwith Holyhead Towing before losing his sea legs for a shore job.
What became of the Argus?
The Argus was based at Holyhead in 1970 when I was second mate. I had previously served on the Vestal out of Harwich. Am I right in thinking that these two vessels were more or less identical?

Was this the TRITON based at Harwich? I recall seeing her being bunkered when I was a very young lad.
The book 'Keepers of the Sea' by Richard Woodman is a good history of the House and has photos of many of the tenders.

Mr Woodman has also fairly recently co-authored, with Andy Adams (ex North Channel then Harwich pilot), another book recently about Trinity House, but I don't know the book's name or what the content is about.

LV18 is on public view at Harwich, but I think may only open for summer months-not sure about that. She is preserved as she finished in service. She 'starred' in a film 'the ship that rocks', and occasionally has a licence to broadcast as a 'Pirate radio' ship. I think-but I haven't checked-that there is a website for the vessel.

THV Mermaid

See enclosed attachment of the Cruise cabin in PATRICIA.
Having served aboard both Mermaid and Patricia I know which one I preferred and it wasn't the one built in Barrow. You may argue that Pat is the prettier ship but if you are on board 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off practicallity and comfort come first. Give me Mermaid any day but of course both ships have their adherents.

Elder Brethern

Question: Mind in neutral? I once worked with Capt Peter Mason (1972 (JesterOf BP Tankers), who became an elder Brethern of TH and ended his career working for Trinity House.
While I knew Peter, ! What or who is an Elder Brethern, and is there a roll or script of such people in this post(s) and what was their role? Was it Advisory or paid post, and in some way a function of TH.(K)(Thumb)

I was an O/S aboard THV Winston Churchill in 1968, operating out of their East Cowes depot on the Isle of Wight before leaving to do my lifeboat and EDH certificates in Southampton. Went into the MN from there.
Difficult and often dangerous work, jumping onto buoys in rough seas, to change gas cylinders or to attach the cargo hook and land them on deck to service and scrape the weed and barnacles off below the waterline. I remember being called out on Boxing Day to spend Xmas week dragging the Needles channel with a grappling hook, looking for the Fairway buoy that had been hit by a ship and sunk. Found and recovered it on New Years eve, dropped it at the depot then straight back out again.

"Scrape the weed and barnacles off below the waterline". Smelled of bad eggs, Ugh!.

The Elder Brethren of Trinity House are made up of Elder Brothers, David. The Elder Brethren are selected from the Younger Brethren. These are made up of former naval officers and ships' Masters. The Master of Trinity House is currently Princess Ann - she took over from Prince Phillip. I think blow-ins also become Elder Brothers when the the Corporation wants to suck up to someone, eg Winston Churchill who wouldn't know a bit from a bollard.

I heard that the Elder Brethren are paid by cheque annually - placed under a gold plate at a banquet at Trinity House (Tower Hill) on Trinity Sunday.

Thank you John for the information. Capt Peter Mason was a master with BP and their Fleet Safety Office-The suggestion of being Jester is because I pushed an ICON of the Jester by mistake. Apologies to Peter and his family or friends who knew him. David F
