TSS KING GEORGE V built 1926 at William Denny & Bros Dumbarton for Caledonian MacBrayne as a Clyde pleasure steamer. She was unique in that she was the first passenger steamer to be fitted with high pressure turbines 2 x Yarrow water tube boilers running at 550lbs and with a steam temperature of 750 deg F. This was not without its problems when she burst a steam pipe and two engineers were scalded to death. In 1929 she was re-boilered with conventional double ended Scotch boilers running at 200lbs. In WW2 she was requisitioned as a tender on the Clyde and also did six trips over to Dunkirk bringing many of our troops back to these shores. KG V steamed well into the 70s for Calmac and was eventually sold to Nationwide Transport Ltd of Cardiff in April 75. After being towed down to Cardiff she was then neglected in the dry dock for the next six years untill Bass Charrington purchased her. Their intention was to convert her into a floating pub/restaraunt to replace Old Caledonian that had been gutted by fire in 1980 on the Embankment in London. Before this was completed she was gutted by fire and it was decided that it would not be economical to save her. The hulk was then towed to the breakers in Cardiff where she ended her days.

Seems like Bass Charrington have done a good job in the demise of our old steamer fleet.
