USN 'Detroit', - AOE 4.

Built by Puget Sound Shipbuilding and launched on 21 June 1969.
One of class of 5 ships, the others are, or were, Sacramento, (AOE 1), Camden, (AOE 2), Seattle, (AOE 3). AOE 5 was cancelled, un-named,
Designed as Fleet replenishment ships, for Carrier Battle groups and were capable of 26 knots. Twin screw with steam turbines with an output of 100,000 shp. 58600 tons full load.
NB the Sacramento and the Camden were fitted with the turbines intended for the cancelled 'Iowa' class battleship 'Kentucky', (BB-66)

I was on the Detroit 1986-1988 as Leading Chief/Division officer for M-Division. Detroit had a great engineering plant and was much faster than the official 26 knots.

remember it while working on the two older us navy tankers, canisteo & caloosathatchee, remember it being around Norfolk va quite a bit, & somthing about a boiler incident , late 80's someone sevely injured on it...
