After time on rail ferries he finished as 2nd mate with Strait ShippingKOMATA was my first ship, 1964 voyage from NZ to Thevenard S.Australia for gypsum then general cargo from melbourne back to NZ. A little "Caledonia",Master was Jock Sutherland, Mate "Haggis"Anderson, 2nd Mate "Sciver" McEwan. Komata then was showing signs of the tough life on the trans Tasman run, but down below in the engine room she was spotless.
