I came from a Yard on the Mersey that gained much fame,
And although I'm a she, I carried a boy's name;
I travelled 3,000 miles to begin my trade,
With my upperworks like scaffold to the world displayed.

I was definately ugly in my early days,
And my deck you could actually lower and raise!
And they didn't give me one funnel, they gave me several more,
In fact, I was quite unusual because in total I had four.

Then my life changed as a new chapter begun,
When I moved to the waters that each day saw the rising of the sun,
To those who then sailed me I brought them near to tears,
But still to my new owners I gave eleven years.

In any seaway I pitched and I rolled,
I wouldn't steer well, but I carried black gold;
Not a dashing liner nor a ship of great fame,
But I flew the red ensign so what was my name ?

Next clue:

I lost my first job because of a bridge,
Where the winters were colder than inside a fridge.
But I worked out my days 'neath the tropical sun,
Till they broke me in pieces in nineteen thirty-one.

Last clue of the day:

Up and down my first cargoes would go,
Depending on how the tides did flow:
My second owners ships still ply the sea,
With bright red hulls now instead of black for me.

Sorry Gydinia - I know this one is a bit of an odd-ball but for her first job you are in the wrong hemisphere.

rising of the sun

I take it that
"When I moved to the waters that each day saw the rising of the sun"
refers to Japan?

Best Wishes

Today's first (and very easy) clue!

On a Canadian River I shuttled forth and back,
Let's hope that puts you on the right track;
But 'neath the tropic sun for my work and toil,
They loved to keep filling me up - with oil!

Morning Raymond - the waters that see the rising of the sun is a large area so do not restrict it to one country.
