Built for the Royal Navy, I ended my days carrying passengers to one of the Dominions.

A White Ensign turned into Red Ensign :)

Not PORT VINDEX, the mistery ship was designed and built has a pure warship right out of the drawing board.
Besides that, the mistery ship as a merchant never came close the Equator.

Hello Santos.
Not the ALBATROSS, this ship by 1948 was already gone for a good couple of years.

Best regards from Lisbon,

The aircraft carrier HMS Puncher was used as a troopship re-patriating Canadian soldiers after the war. She was renamed Muncaster Castle/Bardic/Ben Nevis and was finally scrapped in 1973. Am I close Paulo?

Hello.

Good try but it isn't the HMS PUNCHER.
And it wasn't after WWII.

Hello.

She didn't sailed to the Dominion of Canada, but to a British overseas territory instead

Best regards,
Paulo Mestre.

Your clue seems to have narrowed it down to the Dominion of Canada, still thinking though.

Hello David.

She didn't belonged to Donaldson.
She was barely converted from warship to passenger ship, in order to provide a very much needed means of transportation to the Territory.

Best regards,

Would it be a vessel from Donaldson Line?

Not the HMS LUCIA also.
She was a White Ensign turned into Red Ensign really fast in order to provide passenger berths to a British Overseas Territory.

Paulo Mestre

Not the FAIRSEA also.
She was turned from a warship into a merchantmen imediately after WWI, with a minimal conversion work.

How about the NAIRANA, taken over on the stocks , turned into a seaplane carrier for WW1, even went up to Archangel during the Russian revolution, then handed back to owners to take up her intended role as a Bass Strait ferry in Oz

Am I close?

Not close.
Very, very far away from Australia did she sail .

She was built long before WWI, and operated only briefly as a passenger carrier: she was more of a trouble than a asset.
I don't know if the owners even bothered to repaint the mistery ship from RN grey.

Best regards from Lisbon,
Paulo Mestre
