RNLI calls for Lough Swilly dredging

The RNLI at Lough Swilly has called for the harbour to be dredged after it was unable to deploy its big rescue boat today.

The boat could not be deployed because of low water levels in the bay caused, the RNLI says, by the failure to dredge the harbour.

The institution says it has been requesting for years that the harbour in Co Donegal be dredged.

The crew on duty got a call this morning from fishermen who wanted to get out to secure their fishing boat, which was dragging its anchor in Lenan Bay.

The crew said they had to send the small boat out on stand-by in unsuitable weather conditions in case the fishermen needed help.

A similar incident happened at Exmouth last year where the life boat was called out to an emergency...only to find that due to low tide and silt build up it was stuck on a sandbank.!
