Alaska Marine Highway ferry employed on the Bellingham to Skagway service. Built by Puget Sound in 1963. It is interesting that although Alaska has possibly the most stringent regulations in the world for cruise ship pollution a 42 year old ferry is acceptable. On the other hand the oldest ferry in the world operates in Washington State (Illahee built in 1927). The Greek government is trying to limit their inter-island ferries to being a maximum of 35 years old. Perhaps the Jones Act has a magical effect upon the elimination of pollution and safety concerns.
