yep, agree with TD and JAP. Definitely Lewis, cos I've recently finished researching that yard.Built 1954 for Christian Salveson, 1st purpose built stern trawler, also 1st shelterdecked boat, and I think 1st to process into fillets and freeze at sea. Designed by Bill Lochridge, with input from Andrew Lewis. Hull launched 30th June, 1953, 280 feet long, 1900 hp Lewis Doxford engine, crewed by 80 (over half of these were in processing plant), factory deck had gutting, heading and skinning machines. Also a cod-liver oil and fishmeal plants aboard. Later became Joy II in 1969, scrapped 1985.

Oops sorry thought they meant the 3. I remember going on board the 3 in Immingham many times and thought she was later built. Thanks.

Graham,

Your welcome. I would agree that Fairtry was the first Factory / Filleter but the first stern trawler? Have we not been here before lol! Britain's first UK part fresh part freezer whole fish stern trawler was Lord Nelson who joined the Hull fleet in 1961. She is accepted as the first stern trawler with freezing capacity to be built for the UK fleet. The world's first whole fish freezer stern trawler was Junella. She was the first to freeze ALL of her catch whole. I would also challenge the first shelterdeck on the basis that it was Fairtry's factory that was covered, her working deck was open. Aye, we are a pedantic lot in SN eh? No doubt somebody will prove me wrong lol lol.

All the best.....

Sorry, Neil, it was 1 that I meant, the postings sidetracked to that at one point. I should have made myself clearer!
yup, we've been here before, TD, both on this site and the other site! However, wasn't that about wooden stern trawlers. eventually settling on 1961 built Edindoune.
Now back to steel, if Fairtry 1 was 1954, surely it is earlier than the 1961 Lord Nelson? As for Junella, that was 1962, wasn't it?
can't beat a good discussion!lol!
BTW, have hera a copy of a Lewis advert with a pic of Fairtry I, proclaiming "The world's first stern trawler"....

Quite happy to concede the point about the shelterdeck, tho. Think net-handling and winches were all in the open, tho fish processing was undercover.

Graham,
I think it all lies in the semantics really....

Fairtry: First Stern Trawling Factory ship

Lord Nelson : First UK freezer (part) Stern Trawler

Junella: World's first Wholefish Freezer Stern Trawler

Thus, Fairtry would appear to indeed be the world's first Stern Trawler. But what about her predecessor, the converted minesweeper Fairfree? One could argue she was first......unless someone knows different lol

These debates are great !! Cheers TD
