Hello all. While walking on a beach between Bundaberg and Gladstone on the east coast af Australia, I found a green Canada Dry bottle containing a message.
The paper was in poor condition but the message is as follows:
"This bottle was thrown overboard from the m/v HARFLEET on 9th August 1974 in position 29.45 South 153.36 East when enroute from Yokohama to Whyalla.
Will the finder please post this note to me."
The surname is "PRITCHARD" and the only part of address readable is "RG10 OTH".
I have searched your forum and found info and photo of Harfleet.
If anyone knows of the sender I am sure he would like to hear of my find.

Welcome

pipesofpan,

A warm welcome to the site from Anglesey!
I hope you thoroughly enjoy the SN experience and get many happy hours entertainment from your membership. (Thumb)

From your "Profile", I must say that your lifestyle sounds perfect! (Gleam)

Anyway, if RG10 0TH is a UK Post Code, then it is located in Davis Street on the outskirts of Reading, Berkshire.

I was an avid message-in-a-bottle merchant (had to do something with all those empties!). I received several replies and was always thrilled to get one. 32 years must be some sort of record.

How about trying the local paper in Reading? Good luck and keep us informed.

John T.

PS A green glass Canada Dry bottle is probably a rarity now too.

Not that it will help to solve the message in the bottle, but I can confirm that Harfleet and her sister Harfleur were both on time charter to Canadian Transport of Vancouver BC, the shipping arm of Macmillan Bloedel, at that time. They were good forest products carriers. Regards Colin

Welcome to you pipesofpan.

I hope you are not playing us a merry tune and leading us up the garden with this story! (*))

What sort of cap was on this bottle that lasted for 32 years? Whatever it is they should make ships and cars out of it as they don't seem to last that long.

Anyway - I hope you enjoy the site and find plenty to interest you here.

Regards,

Brian

Thanks to all who have shown interest in my post.
The lid on the Canada Dry bottle is metal, possibly aluminium, and has a small puncture hole in it. This has allowed water and some sand to enter causing considerable damage to the paper.
The message is type-written on a radio operator's telegram form, with the only readable identification being "ITT Marine". The type-face is consistent with an old style type writer. There were 2 copies, apparently 1 to keep, and 1 to post back to sender.
The bottle was lying high on the beach in a fairly remote area and had obviously been there for a considerable time.
One of the joys of being a cruising yachtie as getting to those sorts of places. On the same beach I was thrilled to find a perfect Chambered Nautilis shell about 150mm diam. It was lying in the damp intertidal sand and seemed to be a new arrival.
Once again, thanks everyone
Annette
