Hi there,

Yesterday I was going through my great grandfather's books which he used for study during his days at sea. Interestingly enough I found something that made me very happy but quite baffled at the same time.

I found an inscription for the Second Officer's name, the name of the ship, and a date! You can see it attached below. Some years ago I tried to trace him backwards through crew lists and agreements but came to a stop since one ship of his was the American SS Kerlew and my great grandfather's name was not found onboard.

The ship's name I found on this book is SS Vigo. I think the date is 6/14/17. Please I would like to ask what ship is this 'Vigo' - I would be grateful for any info about this ship, so I that I can continue to search my great grandfather.

Thank you very much!!

Regards,
Kenneth

Oh I forgot,

From the Ellis Island website, I found that there was a 'Vigo' that arrived in New York from Bombay on 9th June 1917.

However, the mentioned Second Mate is not 'P W Marshall' (like I have on my book) but a certain 'Victor Harboard'. Also, my great grandfather, Andrew Camilleri, is not mentioned onboard.

So what 'Vigo' my ship could be if it is not this ship?
Did I read my date correctly?

Thanks for the help once again.

Regards,
Kenneth

At n.liddell (sparks),
Thanks for the suggestion about photoship! That is of great help! Thanks!

And A.D.Frost,
Really thanks about the Wilson Line ship!! I hope the ship I am searching for is this one so that I can search through crew lists and agreements. Thank you very much!!

However, I would like to make sure if this date is correct. In that, am I correct reading the year 1917? Could it be 1911 or 1897? Any suggestions are very welcome.

Also in these dates how many steamers with the name 'Vigo' existed? Including ships which were not British, that is, of any other nationality. Anyone knows where can I find such information please before I can start searching through the crew lists?

Thank you very much n.liddell (sparks) and A.D.Frost!

Regards,
Kenneth
