Hi All, does any one have any information on Tower Tankers, I saw a couple during my time at sea?
Thanks

If by Tower Tankers you are referring to their superstructure resembling a tower then I believe you may be referring to those operated in the late 60's early 70's by Fred Olsen Norway.

Not certain of names but reasonably certain all began with BOR or BORG and were around the 90-95,000 deadweight size.

Hope this helps

Bill

Tower tankers

Fred Olsen

1964 Borgsten/Oswego Courage imo 6400434, its tower needed external strengthening
1965 Borgila/Oswego Patriot imo 6518061, 1977 in stormy weather a 100 ft split in its hull and blew up taking one man, the rest jumped overboard and were rescued, sank off Honolulu
1966 Borgen/Oswego Harmony imo 6619619

Blandfords

1967 Bedford/Cadwallader imo not found (I would like to find it as it makes it easier to find photos)
1967 Bamford/Cadogan/Aly B imo 6724983
1968 Bulford/Casterbridge/Amathus imo 6811047
1969 Bideford/Camden imo 6907004
1970 Boxford/Carnegie/Philip of Macedon imo 7019103
1973 Castleton imo 7328671 (still being built when blandford leased them all to Gatx Oswego, through Carnegie Shipping Company UK)

Please feel free to correct me where possible

I was responsible for looking after both the Carnegie and the Casterbridge, during their lay up in Brunei bay, with BP shipcare. I am surprised Casterbridge ever sailed again as one of her boilers had suffered a hydrogen fire and was completely melted beyond repair. Casterbridge also had a reputation for being haunted ! Being on the ship on my own one day is something I agree with as I had the fright of my life, to the extent I had to call the launch to pick me up, as I wasn't staying there on my own ! :)

Having worked in a shoreside factory for close to fourty years
Being one of only two people inside a massive factory on a Saturday night shift
I know just how the steel and factory buildings creak and groan
Leaving you to doubt you own sanity, so a ship with to water add movement would be worse

In 1962, our family "hitched a ride" on the Fred Olsen oil tanker , called PONTOS. It was on the way back from southern waters with a cargo of whale oil. Sailed from Cape Town to Liverpool. I was sad to hear that it was on its last working voyage, and was due to be broken up in India. Just for interest ! Inger
