Ship's name at stern is in Chinese characters beginning from top with ship's name ( 3 characters ) and port of registration (Tokyo ,2 characters ) followed by English ' xxxxxx Maru ' and ' Tokyo '
Name seems to have more than 4 letters, also ' Hakuyo Maru ' of Shinwa Line may also be a candidate but found no photos of her
As far as I know they adopt many Chinese characters / words ( known as Kan-chi ) Manfred, both ' Sagami ' and ' Suraga Maru ' are the names of a river in Japan denoted by 2 characters but in different writing, had the photo was with a slightly higher resolution to suggest the least hint for either the first or second word it would fast disclose which one it is
But for names like 'Sacramento Maru ' or ' Hague Maru ' you will find it in Japanese alphabet
