I would have thought they would have kept the blades under wraps and out of the weather. No acid rain in those days.

I'm not an engineer, so please excuse this question. Would this be a direct drive turbine connected directly to the propellor shaft with no reduction gearing? It seems much larger than the geared turbines I'm more familiar with.

Yes Wallace it's a direct drive turbine engine, in fact, they would be the largest of their type left in the world after Majestic, which was also direct drive, was lost to fire in 1939.
