I think we'd all love to know the answers to the 'when, where and why'. Whilst not a David Frost - "The clues are there" - methinks there are some ~ land and flag to name but two.
One thing I know for certain, it is not Feb 1st 1944.
My first thought it was either coming up the Firth of Clyde or later further up the Firth like off Holy Loch. The two pieces of land at left came to my head first. Belfast Lough. I've been a couple of time and it doesn't look like it... the two pieces don't connect. One of someone with more knowledge of the Lough would but us straight.
For dates. The ship arrived New York on 23rd April, 1942. Left several days later and arrived on the Clyde on 11th May. If she called at Belfast it was likely the day before of that. 1st June she sailed on Convoy WS19Q bound for South Africa.
You're so right, Stephen, this is yet another 'as always' which is an integral part of SN and what 'it' is all about.
The reason I can be so positive about my given date, is that a certain GI who I am in continued contact with and
who will be 96 in just over two weeks time, waved the S of L tat tar from her decks on that date.
