AUSTVARD sank within seven minutes. A battered 16-man lifeboat got off the ship before it sank, while 12 men were towed under. Only six of them showed up again and managed to recover on a raft. They managed to repair the lifeboat so much that it could carry eight men. The lifeboat towed two rafts with people on. But the weather was bad and had to let the two fleets go. Several on board the lifeboat were in critical condition. On February 4, the lifeboat with two dead on board arrived in Dingle, Ireland. The six on board were taken to hospital, and one of them died here. The two fleets were never found. 18 Norwegians, three British, one Finn and one Estonian perished.
23 men lost. 6 survivors came in to Dingle Ireland.
