Always sad to see such noble ships going under the axe, but we can be grateful for the fact that they - and their crews - served well and faithfully. And by 1949 the writing was very clearly on the wall for the battleship. Sea-based air power had clearly shown its vulnerabilities and to a great extent rendered it obsolete.
Ray, I always felt there was something special about Rodney and Nelson, imagine what they might have looked like but for th3 Washington Treaty. Although truncated, they still oozed might, and suppressed power.
Totally agree Nick, they were superb looking ships that were instantly recognisable. Great names too, two of many that should be reintroduced. Unfortunately the likes of Warspite, Rodney, Nelson (With respect to the barracks), Renown, Revenge etc would look totally out of place on a type 31 frigate. And don't even get me started on Ark Royal, a name that should always be part of the RN!
The photo was originally taken by the official photographer for Thos W Ward, he visited Inverkeithing regularly during the post war period, love to have been there and seen them. I lived overlooking the yard so saw many ships arriving, given me a lifelong interest in ship and shipbreaking in particular, my first visit was to the Howe with my father just after arrival in 58.
